Commented Translation of Technical Text

This bachelor thesis deals with the translation of a didactic text from the electrical engineering field. The work aims to translate and analyze a didactic technical text and is divided into three main parts. The theoretical part introduces namely the characteristics of technical style and didactic style, types of translation procedures, translation transformation and the functional sentence perspective. The practical part presents an English translation of an excerpt taken from a university textbook and the analytic part aims presenting the problems that occurred during the translation process and the assessment of the characteristics of technical didactic style based on this translation analysis.

Commented translation of a text on science and technology

The aim of this bachelor thesis is a translation of a technical text from Czech to the English language and comment on the aspects of the translation and its problems. The chosen text is an electronic textbook, distributed on e-learning and used by the Brno University of Technology solely for educational purposes on the microelectronics field. Theoretical part presents the translation theory, its processes, procedures and types. It also contains a description of the functional styles, especially the style of science and technology. The practical part is represented by the translation of the first two chapters - Introduction and the CMOS technology. The final – analytical part contains the commentary on various issues from different linguistic perspectives.

This thesis is concerned with the full description of the process of translation of the first chapter of ČVUT electro-engineering textbook. This text will be used by future ERASMUS students coming to Prague to study electro-engineering. This thesis consists of an explained list of translation theories, the translated text itself, demonstration of mentioned theories and conclusion with personal experience.

Functions of Passive Voice Structures in Various Genres of ESP compared with Czech Language Use.

This thesis characterizes passive voice structures and their formation, meaning, usage, and functions based on the research of related literature. With its inherent change of word order, the passive voice provides writers with more options of text organization and enables them to emphasize some words while omitting others. Especially in scientific and administrative style, this can help direct readers’ attention to the subject matter, making the text impersonal and objective. The respective aspects of passive structures are described in terms of grammar, semantics, stylistics, and translation, and their use in Czech is also explained and contrasted with English. Subsequently, English for specific purposes is characterized, and finally, the frequency and functions of passives are analyzed in technical texts of three different genres. This serves to confirm and illustrate the differences between the genres and languages, as each English text is also compared with a similar Czech one.

In the 21 century, it is possible to speak about enormous growth of people using English daily in their lives. English has become a language used in the global sphere and it is used in all fields of interests including science, technology, economics, law or medicine. Each of this field has developed its own “branch” of English language with its specific features and genres. Although each of these fields of scientific style is completely different, the aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate them and identify their typical genres, specific features and diversities among them, using texts from specialised books and journals.

In this bachelor's thesis, two translations are provided, the first of a popular scientific article, and the second of a technical text. With both translations, an analysis is presented, elaborating on reasons why the author has chosen this particular typical translation obstacles of the given text and its genre. In the conclusion we can find various differences between the expected translation obstacles and the results from practice. It also further compares these two texts and their genres from the translation standpoint.

The aim of the Bachelor’s thesis is to characterize professional style (features, functions, form, syntax, lexicon) and then to summarize the theoretical knowledge in the field of translation of professional style concerning terminology and translation procedures at the lexical and grammatical level. The practical part of the bachelor’s thesis will focus on application of theoretical knowledge in the quantitative analysis of selected professional texts.

K problematice překladu odborného textu

(česky): Diplomová práce sleduje zvláštnosti syntaktické výstavby ruských a českých textů politologicko- historického charakteru. Autorka vychází ze skutečnosti, že ruské odborné texty jsou predikačně sevřenější než odborné texty české a tuto skutečnost ve své diplomové práci ověřuje. V oblasti predikační sevřenosti byl proveden kvantitativní výzkum českých a ruských původních i překladových textů politologicko-historického charakteru. Kritérii pro výběr textů byly tematická blízkost, dále časové hledisko vzniku textů, existence překladu a minimální požadovaný rozsah o délce 5 000 slov, který však byl u původních textů rozšířen na 7000 slov a u překladových textů na 9 000 slov. Poté byla provedena translatologická analýza z hlediska použitých kondenzačních prostředků a jevů blízkých jako jsou dynamika výrazu, jeho implicitnost a explicitnost. Samotná kontrastivní analýza využitých kondenzačních prostředků v českých i ruských textech vychází z klasifikace M. Jelínka. Získané výsledky potvrzují skutečnost, že ruské politologicko-historické texty jsou predikačně sevřenější a vyznačují se frekventovanějším užitím rozmanitějších kondenzátorů než české politologicko-historické texty. Komentovaný překlad: Počátky šlesvicko-holštýnského hnutí

V centru zájmu disertační práce Joachima Daebela stojí šlesvicko-holštýnské hnutí a jeho vliv především na Německo. Toto téma je z překladatelského hlediska velmi zajímavé. Důvodem je malý zájem o něj v českých podmínkách, který je příčinou nízké zakotvenosti jednotlivých termínů. Na překladatelské atraktivitě problematice Šlesvicka-Holštýnska dodává samotná forma disertace, jež je psána vysoce odborným jazykem, který zdůrazňuje rozdíly mezi systémem českého a německého jazyka. Překladatel se musí vypořádat nejen s překladem bohaté terminologie, ale také se složitou syntaktickou strukturou práce. Cílem komentovaného překladu je dosáhnout funkčně ekvivalentního textu, psaného v rámci možností čtivým jazykem.
